Feathering the Nest for our Pets

Our next round will focus on products for Pets—we are looking for product ideas on Grooming, Feeding, Playtime, Travel, and Bedtime, and more. For those of us who keep pets, you know, we are now part of proud movement called “Pet Parenting.” Our furry friends are like children to most of us and the American Pet Products Association estimates that in 2012, the total pet industry expenditure in the US will be over $52 billion.

Rest assured, we have archived any pet product ideas you may have submitted the last time we did this category call out, but want to include new members in this exciting challenge as well. There is a wealth of interest in making our lives with pets more fun, more comfortable and more interesting. Pets are known to improve one’s heath, whether it is lowering blood pressure, alleviating depression, or even as new evidence suggests, reducing the risk of allergies and asthma. Let’s face it, pets are date magnets—how about a product that plays into that subtle benefit of being a pet owner?

Hi Chanelle!

And while cats and dogs are most popular in the US, with 78 million dogs and 86 million cats in the US, don’t underestimate the value of having fish, birds and even small mammals and reptiles.

So, take a walk to your local pet store and start thinking about what you don’t see on the shelves and create it!

C’mon.. share your genius.

What is the right approach to Brainstorming?

There seems to be a new perspective on the tried and true process of Brainstorming, originally conceived back in the 1940’s. Do we need unconditional support from our peers, without the fear of rejection to get to the essence of a good idea or a healthy amount of discussion, including reasons why it won’t work, to flush out the brilliance of a good idea?

We read an interesting article in Fast Company’s Co.Design recently that elaborated on this question.

Mindmap: coffee project

Here at Genius Crowds, we have a healthy balance of respectful collaboration, diverse viewpoints and open critique from our Panelists. We think providing feedback is good. It will make each and every subsequent submission even better. Brainstorming is only the first step in the process. The more we can elaborate on our product ideas, the more likely everyone else will see its brilliance!

Share your thoughts on this question—unconditional support or healthy debate?
What do you think, geniuses?

Gift Cards come to Open Mic

Hello all you geniuses! We’ve been watching the flow of engagement on the site and want to encourage more momentum in our Open Mic category. When the Panelists are in review, the Geniuses in the Crowd seem to get quiet. Why not focus your energy on the Open Mic submissions at that time? The Open Mic category is incredibly important to us. We comb it everyday to find suitable product ideas to match to our clients needs. You never know who might be looking for the next double sided iron or lava lamp door handles, just to name a few of the Open Mic submissions we’ve seen over time!

Also, feel free to resubmit product ideas that you may have further developed or have new images to upload. Every month these ideas are getting better and better.

As a result, we want to reward you! We will now be giving gift card rewards for those Open Mic product ideas that are voted to the top. So show your “love” for those ideas you think you would buy and watch for an announcement on May 28th to see who is chosen as a Crowd Favorite this month.

Quick update on products in development

As a continued effort, to communicate more frequently on the status of products in development, we’ve listed below all products and where they stand. As you know, after we select products as prototype contenders, we go through a fairly rigorous review of existing patents, the competitive landscape as well as the manufacturing capabilities of our partners.

Currently, Genius Crowds has 20 products in exclusive product development, of which 15 are still in active sales development, and 1is ready for the shelf. This list contains 5 new items which have been signed within the past few weeks. In addition, we are happy to announce that last week we signed another new Prototype Contender. Say congratulations to bcoffey, for her submission of the Born Bottle.

As always, members whose products are under license, receive a separate private update from our team. For the rest of the community we’ve listed Genius Crowds items with a non-confidential update:

Still in active development : Hair Squeegie, Adjustable Hanger, Twist It Utensils, Off Tha Grill, Roll and Slice Toddler Food Slicer, Quick Change Sheets, Swivel Spoon, Throw Rug in a Box, Pocket Pet Knife (Tool), Merry Go Brush. New additions to this list include: Under Table tent, Shoe FX, Crevice Cleaner, GripZ, and the Born Bottle.

Unfortunately, the following ideas have dropped off our active list in development for various reasons which may include: competitive items in the market place, patent issues, or the novelty nature of the product. These are: Tidy Tubes, Bubble Brush, Floating Ball Shaped Cooler and Tablet Carrier.

Hope all are enjoying this challenge for ideas using Paper and Textiles. The timing is perfect as we get ready to attend the National Stationary Show in NYC where manufacturers from all over the world will attend!

Paper and Textiles: Some Inspiration Please…

So, we’ve been enjoying this new challenge against a material instead of a category. While we will always group our products against their functions, this is a fun exploration of creativity of a different sort. We thought we would share some of the cool and inspiring products we’ve seen that come from these materials.

Check out this pizza plate that won a Red Dot Design Award

And, you’ve got to love a full line of cardboard furniture at our paper life

Have your heard about biometric textiles? These are fabrics that can measure your temperature, check vital signs, contain heat, etc. Functional fabrics are in the news for fitness wear but how might these fabrics transfer to other areas of our lives?

Many of the ideas we’ve seen so far are ingenious!

Keep ‘em coming…
And reinvent everything.

Collaboration is a beautiful thing!

One of the things I love most about Genius Crowds is the genuinely helpful, collaborative and supportive nature of our Community. It’s encouraging and delightful to see members provide well thought out constructive feedback to one another when reviewing ideas.

In short – It makes everything at Genius Crowds “better.” Strong submissions get “stronger” becoming ever more interesting, improved, and relevant from the input the community provides.

It makes the community one where collaboration is KEY, and makes others want to be a part of it. (psssttt we’re almost a 4,000 members…. keep spreading the word!)

We noticed some amazing feedback across the board recently but we wanted to acknowledge a few members that really stood out from the crowd (pun intended.)

Feedback like you see in the examples above helps “everyone.” It’s not just helping the ideator, it serves as a guide to others… it serves as an example, if one does it… more will… the more that do… the better all ideas get. When you see great feedback don’t forget to use that little heart icon next to a comment and let members know you appreciate what they do!

Positive, constructive suggestions, and supportive feedback makes Genius Crowds not just a place where you can submit an idea in hopes it makes it to the shelf… it makes it a place where you can submit an idea, really improve it, and make it even more worthy of the shelf! The more often that happens – the better for all.

Don’t forget Participation has its’ rewards! We give gift cards to members who help others in each round based on metrics that we measure each month.

Share your (feedback) Genius(es)!

Next Topic: Paper Products and Textiles

Just to change it up a little, this month we thought we would focus on a challenge based on materials instead of a product category. Sound like fun? Imagine having to create product ideas based on only using certain materials–could be anything really—recycled plastic, plumbing supplies or candy?

This month we thought it would be interesting to dream up products made from paper and fabrics or textiles. Imagine using these materials to create products for yourself, your home, your office, your life. Pretty broad category with the limitation only on materials you might use to prototype and manufacture. In our reality tv obsessed world, we’ve seen these contestants face these types of bids before.

Think journals, calendars, scrapbooks, party supplies, home entertaining, tableware, textiles, linens, window dressings, beds, sofa coverings… you name it. Make it innovative in it’s use and design and let’s see where this challenge takes us!

Work your magic geniuses…

How we select submissions

It is such a thrill to be a member of the Genius Crowds community. Having been through one full cycle of submissions and collaborative comments, I was truly impressed by the number of great ideas that were submitted by the community. As you know, we pick items based on our criteria (mainstream appeal, marketability, ease of manufacturing, and the competitive landscape) to move to the next round.

I joined Genius Crowds with the expressed responsibility of expediting the “time to market” on both the existing prototype contenders and future ones. While I know it can be disheartening, frustrating and disappointing not to be chosen, it just takes one great idea in a lifetime for it to be rewarding. Also, as you have seen, just because an idea is not chosen today, it doesn’t mean that we don’t continually review our archives for ideas that may be more appropriate for any given partner down the road.

In the past, members would submit their idea(s) and would not get any feedback or explanation as to why their idea(s) was not chosen. Today, with the panelist review and commentary, we are now committed to give you, what we hope, is valuable feedback on your ideas. The comments and challenges we present to ideators are the same that a manufacturer or buyer might say to us when we present your ideas. It is my job to convince the manufacturer, buyer or retailer that your item is unique, useful and has broad appeal.

This is where the potential market for a product makes a difference. Our item selection is based on “mainstream” appeal, which means that it will serve a medium/large market segment of consumers. I have received a few PM’s, asking me to explain this term. Not to be repetitive, but our manufacturing partners like products that serve a wide audience segment so for example, a left handed decorative melon carver might not be considered mainstream. I hope this clarifies some of the business jargon. I look forward to working with you on your next round of ideas.
